Lance and I are thinking that there might be interest in opening a CNC topic (at the level of the Main Discussion, MGL, Charity Guitar, etc.) I know that many of you, like me, have an interest in this (even if it is purely intellectual curiosity). I know that this is not technically a lutherie topic, but certainly it is assumed that is how we would apply the tool. I am interested in hearing comments to that idea. There is no sense in hosting a party if nobody shows up.

I think it might be a good idea. I'm not sure, as you said that it would be continuously used, but it could be a nice way to split it out to make searching through the topic easier. |

Just bouncing ideas around. I certainly think it would / could be interesting to "blog" the construction of home built machines. Pass programs around (thinking perhaps bridges or solid body electrics. Develop a FAQ of everything a newbie needs. Find sources of CNC outsourcers... just lots of CNC topics related to instrument construction. I am not trying to "force" it to happen. But I hear the siren's song of CNC and I suspect that many of you do too... and I am thinking that it might be something of interest. But I am just not sure. |

Hi Brock, I think it's a great idea. I must admit I am one who falls into the intellectual curiousity category. It would be interesting if one of the outgrowths is a new OLF supplier providing CNC outsourcing services or customized jigs, templates, bridges...etc. |

I would try to participate, by I have to wonder with so few members actually using it if the topics wouldn't mostly be about the ethics. On the MIMF in the past, every single CNC discussion, without fail, would eventually degrade into who's a real luthier and who's a cheater. |

You're right. Those conversations are inevitiable. However, let's have those in the main forum. At the end of the day, I think that is a "Taste's Great -- Less Filling" argument. Unwinnable, and to a large extent, pointless. Both sides make valid arguments, but nonetheless, the technology exists and it WILL be used by instrument makers. Whether we choose to use it is a personal one. However, I think that this may be a topic everyone would get something out of, regardless if you choose to invest in the technology or not. |

I would like to see this forum as well. While I may not be even close to investing in a CNC setup, I'd still like to learn what I can in case that day comes sooner than I though it would. |

Go for it Lance/Brock. If folks try and wander off to the ethics issue, just ignore the posts. It is impossible to have a one sided argument, well, unless I'm having a really bad day.

So what should we do? Not use table saws and edge sanders, spindle sanders, drill presses, etc etc and use only our bare hands and a chisel and plane to make guitars? It's a silly argument that switching from a human brain controlling the tools to an electronic brain controlling them somehow removes the persona of a "hand made" instrument. For goodness sakes, they're just guitars. So please everyone, let's not get hung up on using cnc. As John has mentioned...let's not let it degrade to that. Besides...in every luthier's heart there's a desire for a Fadal...

John--Just saw your post above and you don't need to "beg, plead and bribe". Just send money.
Actually, I would love to set up a CNC service for OLF but my time is very limited. I'm very happy to share the experience and little bit of knowledge that I can. I "grew up" as a machinist and it's amazing how much of that trade applies to instrument building. Nelson |
